South African Reds
We will be tasting new releases of South African Reds, for inclusion on our list. Robert Boehme of Vermont Wine Merchants Company will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Although South Africa is regarded as a New World wine producer, the first grapes were pressed for wine at the Cape in 1659 under the command of Jan van Riebeeck. He had come to the Cape in 1652 to establish a settlement on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. Vineyards were planted more extensively a generation later, when the French Huguenots began arriving from 1688 onwards, fleeing religious persecution. The Cape has witnessed many momentous events in South Africa's history: the landing of the Dutch settlers in 1652, the British invasion during the Napoleonic Wars, and the rebellion into the interior known as the Groot Trek. This was where, in 1990, Nelson Mandela took his first historic walk to freedom. And it was here, four years later, that Archbishop Tutu described the new South African nation as 'the rainbow people of God', and the 'rainbow nation' was born. With the advent of democracy, the opening of new markets and exposure to international trends, South Africa can now compete with confidence on the world wine stage. A passionate new generation of winemakers, many with experience of harvests around the globe, are keen to learn, experiment and consolidate. There's also been a focused shift from grape farming to wine growing. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Graham Beck, Pinotage, Coastal Region 2006

Beaumont, “Raoul’s Old Basket Press”,

Walker Bay, 45%Malbec, 45% Petit Verdot & 10% Merlot 2006

Môreson, Merlot, Coastal Region 2001

Riesling from around the world
We will be tasting new releases of Riesling from around the world, for inclusion on our list. John Fagan of Calmont Beverage, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Because of both its cellar longevity and its ability to maintain varietal identity while reflecting the individuality of its terroir, Riesling may be the best of all the white wine grapes. Its homeland is Germany, where it has been cultivated since the 1400s or earlier, and where it is made into wines that run the gamut from bone dry and crisp quaffers to the complex, unctuous nectars made from Botrytis-affected, shriveled berries, individually late-picked, and known by the moniker Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling vines are particularly hard-wooded and tolerant of cold weather and they bud late, so are well-suited to the coldest wine-growing climes. Hillside microclimates which provide cool climates and at the same time plenty of sun exposure, yet protection from the winds are of paramount importance to quality Riesling. Riesling has a powerful and distinctive floral and apple-like aroma that frequently mixes in mineral elements from its vineyard source and is often described as "racy." Its high natural level of Tartaric acid enables it to balance even high levels of residual sugar. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Pacific Rim, Dry Riesling, American NV

Spy Valley, Dry Riesling, Marlborough, New Zealand 2004

Charles Schleret, Alsace Riesling, “Herrenweg”, France 2002

Dr. F. Weins-Prüm, “Estate Riesling”,

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany 2006

Gunderloch, “Diva”, Riesling Spätlese, Rheinhessen, Germany 2007

Red blends from California, Wine Tasting
We will be tasting new releases of Red blends from California, for inclusion on our list. Anthony Wagner of G. Housen, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. The past decade has seen a strong trend away from pure varietally labeled wines in the U. S. A. Wine lovers have apparently grown tired of varietal wines that resemble each other too closely and are intrigued by blended wines with proprietary names. Unlike French law, which governs all blends, U. S. law gives the winemaker total discretion. And so we now have blends of Syrah and Zinfandel, unheard of just a decade ago. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify handcrafted wines blended from the traditional "noble" Bordeaux varietals. Most American wines are labeled after the grape variety that comprises at least 75% of that wine. A label with "Cabernet Sauvignon" indicates that the wine is comprised of 75% or more of the grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon. Many winemakers, however, believed the varietal requirement did not necessarily result in the highest quality wine from their vineyards. "Meritage" was coined to identify wines that represent the highest form of the winemaker's art, blending, and distinguish these wines from the more generic moniker "red table wine." The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Buzzard Tree, “Meritage”, Paso Robles 2004

Lyeth, “Meritage”, Sonoma County 2005

Newton, “Claret”, Napa Valley 2005

Artesa, “Elements”, 79% Sonoma County and 21% Napa County 2001

Conn Valley Vineyards, “Eloge”, Napa Valley 2000

A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person. Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar Friday, August 23rd 4:00 to 6:00
