Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Thursday, October 16th 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of Malbec from Argentina and France, for inclusion on our list. Stuart Timmons of Farrell Distribution will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Called Auxerrois in Cahors, Côt in the Loire and or Pressac in other places, the grape became less popular in Bordeaux after 1956 when frost killed off 75% of the crop. However, Malbec continued to be popular in Cahors where it was mixed with Merlot and Tannat to make dark, full-bodied wines, and more recently has been made into 100% malbec wines there. Malbec is widely planted in Argentina producing a softer, less-tannic driven variety than the wines of Cahors. The best examples of these wines come from the Argentine region of Mendoza. Malbec is the premier grape of Argentina. It seems to have found a natural home, being used to produce very popular varietal wines. It is now thought that the variety known as Fer in that country is a clone. Malbec truly comes into its own in Argentina, where it is the major red varietal planted. Much of the Malbec vines there were transplanted from Europe prior to the outbreak of phylloxera and most is therefore ungrafted, planted on their own roots. Sadly, over the years, phylloxera has infested Argentina, too, and vineyards are now being replanted on resistant rootstock. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Pannotia Vineyards, Mendoza 2005
Terra Rosa, “Old Vine”, Mendoza 2003
Gascón, Mendoza 2007
High Note, “Elevated”, Uco Valley, Mendoza 2007
Château Haut-Monplaiser, Cahors 2005

Wed, Oct 22nd
Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Wednesday, October 22nd 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of Reds from the Côtes du Rhône area of France, for inclusion on our list. Rafael Flores of Artisanal Cellars, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. The Cotes du Rhone in Provence is home to some of the most dependable wines at prices that are equally appealing. The reason for the affordability is a combination of the abundance of wine produced and the concentration on making fine wines rather than marketing them. Of the twenty three grape varieties grown in the Cotes du Rhone, Syrah and Grenache are the most commonly used for reds with Mourvedre, Cinsault or Carignan added. Syrah is the only red grape in the northern Rhône, whereas the grenache grape is dominant in the south. Grenache, the second most widely planted grape in the world (due to its dominance in southern France and across Spain) it is perfectly suited to the hot, dry and windy climate of the southern Rhône valley, where the infamous and ferocious Mistral serves to cool the grapes at night, and to the region's long growing season. It tends to produce high levels of natural sugar which is why, in a hot summer, many Côtes du Rhônes reached alcohol levels of 13.5 or even 14%. This also explains why Grenache is typically blended with Syrah, which adds a lean backbone and aids in the wine's longevity. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Côtes du Rhône, La Truffière 2007
Côtes du Vivarais, Clos de L’Abbe Dubois 2005
Syrah, Domaine Barou, Vin de Pay des Collines Rhodaniennes 2006
Côtes du Rhône Villages, La Truffière, “Vielles Vignes Visan” 2004
Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne 2004 A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person.

Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Wednesday, October 29th 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of differing styles of Chardonnay, for inclusion on our list. Bill O’Connor of Baker Distributing, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. In 2001, Chardonnay stood eighth-ranked in global planting of grape varieties by area, with an estimated 140,000 hectares, mostly in the United States of America, France, Australia and Italy. Different wine making techniques also produce wide variances in the Chardonnay flavor profile. Such techniques as barrel fermentation, proportion of new to old cooperage, lees stirring, and partial, complete, or prevention of malolactic fermentation generate controversy and lively discussion among winemakers. Chardonnay's intrinsic blank canvas quality also allows its flavors to be dramatically affected by differences in soil, climate, and vineyard practices. It is believed to be named after the village of Chardonnay in the Mâconnais region of France, where Pouilly-Fuissé is currently produced and it is possible that the variety was first bred there. Part of the attraction of Chardonnay, for wine makers and lovers alike, is its versatility. In the U.S., it is often made using full malolactic fermentation with some oak handling. Without oak, Chardonnay generally produces a soft wine, often with fruity, minerally flavors. When aged with oak, Chardonnay acquires a smokey, vanilla, caramel, and butter aroma. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Mâcon Villages, Georges Duboeuf FR 2006
Toasted Head, California 2007
Villa Maria, “Unoaked”, Hawks Bay NZ 2007
Doña Paula, “Los Cardos”, Luján de Cuyo AR 2007
Trefethen, Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley, “Estate Grown” 2005

Location: Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Admission: $15.00 per person.
