Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
Wednesday, July 2nd 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of German Riesling, for inclusion on our list. Robert Boehme of Vermont Wine Merchants Company will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. German wines are produced according to a quality scale based on the ripeness of the grapes at harvest time. In general, riper grapes produce richer, more complex wines. Because of Germany’s cool, northern climate, full ripeness can often be difficult to achieve, so this ripeness-based quality scale does make some sense. The problem is that it ignores the historically proven differences in variety and vineyard site and does nothing to address differences in quality among producers. The best way to proceed as a consumer is to and find the producers whose style you enjoy and then focus on the differences between the quality levels and vineyards in their wines. Of all the grapes of Germany, the most noble is the Riesling — a variety that can do well even in stony soil and can subsist on a minimum of moisture. It is also frost-resistant and a very dependable bearer of high quality grapes which have an acidity level that gives the wine a racy freshness and contributes to its long life. To reach its full potential, Riesling needs extra days of sun; ripening is very late, usually not until the latter half of October. Riesling produces elegant wines of rich character with an incomparable fragrance and taste, often reminiscent of peaches, or when young, apples. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:
Dr.Pauly Bergweiler, “Noble House”, Riesling, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer 2006
Loosen Bros., “Dr. L”, Riesling, Mosel 2006
Meulenhof, Erdener Treppchen, Riesling Kabinett, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer 2005 Weingut Leitz, Rüdesheimer Magdalenen Kreuz, Riesling Spätlese, Rheingau 2006 St. Urbans-Hof, Ockfener Bockstein, Riesling Spätlese, Mosel 2007 A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person.

Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
We will be tasting new releases of Reds from the Cotes-du-Rhone, for inclusion on our list. Anthony Wagner of G. Housen, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. The Northern Rhone is a land of steep, steep slopes carved into granite hillsides by the progress of the river over thousands of years. Vines cling to near vertical surfaces, or terraces carved into the rock. Towards the south, the steep slopes give way to a broad valley floor which is baking hot in the summer. The Cotes du Rhone Appellation Controlee actually encompasses the Northern Rhone too, but the vast majority of wine is produced from the flat, arid plains of the south. Of the twenty three grape varieties grown in the Cotes du Rhone, Syrah and Grenache are the most commonly used for reds with Mourvedre, Cinsault or Carignan added. While, syrah is the only red grape in the northern Rhone, the grenache grape is dominant in the south. Grenache, the second most widely planted grape in the world (due to its dominance in southern France and across Spain) is perfectly suited to the hot, dry and windy climate of the southern Rhone valley, where the infamous and ferocious Mistral serves to cool the grapes at night, and to the region's long growing season. It tends to produce high levels of natural sugar which is why, in a hot summer many Cotes du Rhones reach alcohol levels of 13.5 or even 14%. This also explains why Grenache is typically blended with Syrah, which adds a lean backbone and aids in the wine's longevity. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Cotes-du-Ventoux, J. Vidal-Fleury 2004
Cotes-du-Rhone, Domaine Le Garrigon 2006
Cotes-du-Rhone, Chateau Les Quatre Filles 2006
Beaumes-de-Venise, "Cuvee Prestige",

Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar
We will be tasting new releases of Pinot Noir from California, for inclusion on our list. Stuart Timmons of Farrell Distribution will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Pinot Noir, the grape responsible for the great red wines of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, is regarded as one of the world’s noblest of wine varieties. All the Pinot varieties, the ‘noir’ version in particular, are highly susceptible to genetic variation, and indeed, a great many clones of Pinot Noir are found in commercial cultivation around the globe. Despite the many clonal variations available to growers, Pinot Noir is rather particular about its growing conditions. It typically produces its best results in cool, often fog-prone regions. However, in the late 1980s, excellent Pinot Noirs finally began to emerge with consistency from various California regions; in appellations such as Chalone, Mount Harlan, Los Carneros, the Russian River Valley, and the Santa Lucia Highlands, as well as in Santa Barbara County. Appropriately nicknamed the ‘heartbreak grape’, no other varietal can claim to have simultaneously seduced and rejected as many suitors. Pinot Noir’s character can be hard to qualify. In favorable cool-climate regions, Pinot Noir's youthful character can suggest flavors ranging from red berry fruit to cherries. As Pinot Noir-based wines mature, they rapidly develop strong earthy dimensions, such as forest floor, mushroom, game and violets. Young or old, Pinot Noir’s greatest attribute is a harmonious, even sublime combination of fruit, alcohol, body, acidity and tannin. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Cartlidge & Browne, California 2006
Gallo Family Vineyards, “Sonoma Reserve”, Sonoma County 2006
Hook & Ladder, “Estate Bottled”, Russian River Valley 2006
MacRostie, Carneros 2004

Wed, Jul 30th
South African Sauvignon Blanc
We will be tasting new releases of South African Sauvignon Blanc, for inclusion on our list. Bill O’Connor of Baker Distributing, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Although South Africa is regarded as a New World wine producer, the first grapes were pressed for wine at the Cape in 1659 under the command of Jan van Riebeeck. He had come to the Cape in 1652 to establish a settlement on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. Vineyards were planted more extensively a generation later, when the French Huguenots began arriving from 1688 onwards, fleeing religious persecution. The Cape has witnessed many momentous events in South Africa's history: the landing of the Dutch settlers in 1652, the British invasion during the Napoleonic Wars, and the rebellion into the interior known as the Groot Trek. This was where, in 1990, Nelson Mandela took his first historic walk to freedom. And it was here, four years later, that Archbishop Tutu described the new South African nation as 'the rainbow people of God', and the 'rainbow nation' was born. With the advent of democracy, the opening of new markets and exposure to international trends, South Africa can now compete with confidence on the world wine stage. A passionate new generation of winemakers, many with experience of harvests around the globe, are keen to learn, experiment and consolidate. There's also been a focused shift from grape farming to wine growing. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

MAN Vintners, Coastal Region 2007

Kumala, Western Cape 2006

Juno Cape Maidens, Breede River Valley 2007

Neil Ellis, “Sincerely”, Western Cape 2007

Neil Ellis, Groenekloof 2007

A sign-up sheet will be available at the front desk (253-5742 or 800-826-7000) and there will be a $15.00 fee per person. Wednesday, July 30th 4:00 to 6:00
