9th Annual Stowe Weekend of Hope

The Stowe Weekend of Hope is an annual forum for education, enlightenment, and recreation for cancer patients and survivors with any type of cancer…and their families. The focus is to inspire, educate, and celebrate the lives of people living with cancer. This unique event addresses the complex challenges and needs of people with cancer at any stage in their disease. Cancer presents families with many challenges – physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial.

The Stowe Weekend of Hope was founded in 2001 and continues to be a three-day weekend retreat and outreach experience for hundreds of cancer survivors and their families in the restorative environment of Stowe, Vermont. Since its inception, the event has grown locally and nationally to continue to inspire the search for new and innovative research and education in both the traditional and nontraditional cancer treatments and therapies. This forum promotes real educational opportunities for cancer patients, and presents the most current medical research in all areas of cancer treatments.

Trapp Family Lodge Wine Tasting: Spanish Reds

We will be tasting new releases of Spanish red wines, for inclusion on our list. Robert Boehme of the Vermont Wine Merchants Company will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Spanish winemaking really took off after the Reconquest of Spain by the Catholic Kings. The re-established religious communities and monasteries played a significant role in this process; the monks and friars of various orders worked to recover the winemaking tradition. Wine was vital for their religious rituals, and they also filled their cellars, supplying wine to pilgrims and local taverns. Thus, the vineyards flourished once again in areas surrounding the monasteries and abbeys, and later in other regions. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. The wines featured will be:

Tres Ojoa Old vines Garnacha, Calatayud 2007

Olivares Altos de la Hoya" Monastrell, Jumilla 2007

Papa Luna 75% Garnacha, 20% Shiraz and 5% Monastrell, Calatayud 2006

Vermont History through Song

Singer and researcher Linda Radtke and pianist John Lincoln bring Vermont history to life with engaging commentary about the songs found in the Vermont Historical Society’s collection of sheet music. Dressed in period costume, Ms. Radtke takes listeners through state history, singing the songs Vermonters published in their communities. From the earliest published song, “Green Mountain Farmer” (1798), through 1850 temperance ballads, songs from Vermonters in the Civil War, to songs about Calvin Coolidge, Lake Champlain songs for the Quadricentenniel celebration, and both state songs, this delightful program is a celebration of the Vermont spirit through music.
