snowshoeingStowe Recreation Path: The Stowe Rec Path is a favorite among cross-country skiers. It is regularly groomed allowing for easy nordic skiing and spectacular vistas, all within easy reach of fabulous shopping and dining!

Many of the trails are also perfect for snowshoeing. The new, lightweight materials and easy-to-use bindings make it easier than ever to enjoy snowy, wooded trails. If you like to walk, you can snowshoe. Combine it with a warm fire and good food after your journey, and you have a winter experience that you will always remember!

person or rec path skiingIf you crave distance on your Vermont Nordic tour, make Stowe your base and enjoy the beauty and challenges of The Catamount Trail, a 300-mile cross-country trail that runs the length of Vermont. Closer to the beaten-path, your family will take pleasure in a leisurely trek along Stowe's 5.5 mile recreation path with easy access to restaurants and shops along the way.

Wiessner Woods

Try Cross Country Skiing at Wiessner Woods. Follow the Catamount Trail as it meanders through the Hemlock forest passing by the Gnome Home on the way to the Halvorsen's sugar house.

Directions: From Stowe Village, take Route 108 (the Mountain Road) 3.5 miles to Edson Hill Road. Turn right onto Edson Hill Road, pass the entrance to Stowehof Inn and take the next drive on your right.  Park in the Wiessner Woods parking lot (please do not park alongside the road) on the left and follow signs to the trail head. Sterling Valley XC trail network also offers superb nordic skiing. Over the past three summers significant improvements have been made to the trails on this 2,150 acre conservation land with the support of the Stowe Conservation Commission.

Trail Report

The Stowe Mountain Resort Cross-Country Ski Center offers 42 km of groomed Nordic ski trails. Novices will be introduced to a new world of outdoor winter beauty by an expert staff with lessons, rentals and tours in a variety of activities including in-track classic skiing, backcountry ski touring, Telemark and snowshoeing.

The Catamount Trail

At 300 miles in length and spanning the length Vermont from the MA to the Canadian borders, the Catamount Trail is one of Vermont's treasured winter gems. It is a cross-country ski and snowshoe trail that has been in the making since 1984 and was fully linked together in 2008. Thousands of skiers and snowshoers take to the trail every winter season - most for the day, many on Catamount Trail Association tours and some to go end-to-end - all enjoying the backcountry, touring center, farmland and village surroundings along the way.

Cross Country Ski Events in Stowe

The Stowe Derby

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015: For a unique sporting event, plan to attend The Stowe Derby (, a 10-mile cross-country ski race from the top of Mt. mansfield to Stowe village that has challenged people of all ages since 1945.

Participants will ski over 10 miles of challenging terrain, racing down Mt. Mansfield's Toll Road (a beginner alpine ski trail) and along nearly the entire length of the Stowe Recreation Path before reaching the finish in the village.
