Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar Wednesday, September 3rd 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of Reds from the Piedmond area of Italy, for inclusion on our list. Rafael Flores of Artisanal Cellars, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Piedmont, Italy's westernmost region with borders on Switzerland and France, is hemmed in by the Alps and the Apennines, which explain why its name means foot of the mountain. The climate is rigid by Italian standards, with distinct changes of season. Winters are cold with plenty of snow. Summers are for the most part hot and dry. Spring and fall are temperate to cool with fog normal at harvest time. An overwhelming majority of Piedmont's wines derives from native vines. Besides the noble Nebbiolo, source of Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Ghemme, which are all DOCG, Barbera ranks as the most popular vine for reds, followed by Dolcetto, which is enjoyed for its mellow, round flavors. Piedmont boasts the greatest number of classified wines, with 8 DOCGs and 43 DOCs, including the regionwide appellation of Piemonte to classify premium wines. California Red Zinfandel - Wine Tasting
Wine Tasting in the Trapp Family Lodge Wine Cellar Wednesday, September 10th 4:00 to 6:00 We will be tasting new releases of California Red Zinfandel, for inclusion on our list. Bill O’Connor of Baker Distributing, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Zinfandel came to the United States in 1820, when New York nurseryman George Gibbs carried back various cuttings from the Imperial Austrian plant species collection. Over the next two decades, Zinfandel became a popular table grape in the Northeast U.S. Zinfandel is now considered indigenous to California, where it has thrived since the mid-1850's. Zinfandel only achieved widespread popularity in America, starting about 1980, as a pink, slightly sweet wine. In fact, this popularity so outstripped all other forms, that many fans think that there is actually a grape called "White Zinfandel" (there isn't)! Zinfandel as a red wine can be made light and fruity, much like French Beaujolais, or lively, complex and age worthy, like Cabernet or claret. It can also be made into big, ripe, high alcohol style wines that resemble Port. Zinfandel is also a component of most California "jug" wines, since it is one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in California. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread. John Fagan of Calmont Beverage, will be on hand to discuss the wines and answer any questions. Spain’s geographical position, its climatic differences and its wide variety of soil types makes the peninsula a privileged place for producing wines with very different characteristics. Spain's vineyards are characterized by their often extreme climatic conditions. Vines may be found growing in desert or volcanic regions or in landscapes blanketed by snow. They can grow successfully in places with very low annual rainfall, like the central and south-eastern dry regions, or in extremely damp areas like those of north-western Spain, influenced by Atlantic weather. In fact, in some areas the strength of the winemaking tradition is encouraged by the grapevine being the only plant capable of surviving and flourishing in extreme temperatures. With nearly 1.2 million hectares under vine of which over 97% is for wine, Spain continues to be the country with the largest area of vine cultivation in the European Union and the world (accounting for one third of the total EU area, followed by France and Italy with approximately 25% each, representing more than 15% of the world’s area under vine). Spain’s wine producing tradition extends back to the Romans. Vines are Spain’s third ranked crop by area after cereals and olive trees. The format will be casual, walk around with cheese and bread.
