Summertime Along the Green Mountain Byway

June 25, 2015

The main problem that visitors to the Green Mountain Byway seem to have in the summer is narrowing down what to do while they’re here. Whether you enjoy hiking, mountain biking, taking scenic drives, sampling the fare of over 40 restaurants, visiting art galleries, shopping or just strolling around the historic Byway villages, it’s challenging to try to fit it all in during one visit.

The Byway region is Vermont’s premiere outdoor recreation destination. There are many opportunities for scenic hikes in the Green Mountains to the west and the Worcester Range to the east as well as in numerous town-owned and privately conserved forests. The area has rapidly become a popular mountain biking destination with state-of-the art trails at Perry Hill in Waterbury and Cady Hill Forest, Trapp Family Lodge, Adams Camp & Sterling Forest in Stowe.

For water sports, the Waterbury Reservoir is popular with fisherman, water-skiers and paddlers of all sorts with access at Waterbury and Little River state parks in Waterbury and the Cotton Brook canoe access in Stowe.

There are even more choices along the Byway for arts and culture and organized events. For outstanding local theater productions, visitors can choose between the Waterbury Festival Playhouse and the Stowe Theater Guild. Each town has its own weekly farmers market throughout the summer that include local edibles as well as arts and crafts. Throughout the summer into the fall, there are over 100 organized events between the two towns. Some of the biggest and most popular include:

  • June 23 - 25: B3 Festival - Bikes, Brews & Beats
  • July 1 - 4: Stowe’s Fourth of July Celebration with Seven Miles of Sales
  • July 7 – 9: Stoweflake Hot Air Balloon Festival
