Stowe Theatre Guild’s Uniquely Different Production of INTO THE WOODS
Innovative Direction and Creative Design Offer Extraordinary Theatrical Experience

Stowe Theatre Guild in Stowe, Vermont, presents Stephen Sondheim’s bow to fairy tales when they present INTO THE WOODS at the Town Hall Theatre, beginning on July 18.

Director Johanna Boyce, who in 2003 directed the moving ONCE ON THIS ISLAND on the Stowe stage, has brought her vision of a lush medieval forest into the theatre, beautifully realized by set designer Milford Cushman and set decorator Rick Loya. The musical will be presented on and off the traditional stage, in the round, bringing the audience into intimate contact with Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, handsome princes, and of course the Big Bad Wolf. Giants, Three Little Pigs, a Baker and His Wife and a very contrary witch are also pivotal to the story.

Boyce and music director Jane Bouffard have set this production in the middle ages, and Andrea Freeman’s costumes are as sumptuous and as authentic as the forest.

There are many reasons why theatregoers revere Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony Award-winning classic, but certainly one primary reason is the story’s magical combination of humor and horror. These woods hold surprises, witty banter, and poignant character arcs that, along with the beauty and complexity of the music, will beguile and entrance.

In addition to 12 evening performances between July 18 and August 4, 2 matinees featuring the child-friendly Act I (humor, no horror…) will be performed on Saturday, July 21 and 28. Children under the age of 10 might be advised to attend the matinee.
