SIXTH STOWE SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES DAZZLING INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SERIES
From symphonic to percussion, world-renown musicians to a child prodigy, festival explores classical and contemporary music in exhilarating programs
STOWE, VT (June 6, 2007) — The sixth annual Stowe Summer Music Festival promises its most ambitious concert series to date, featuring world-renown performers and some of the worlds most talented, up-and-coming, classical musicians. The four-day musical extravaganza runs from Wednesday August 15 to Saturday, April 18, 2007. Highlights include Mexican percussion ensemble, Tambuco; the celebrated Cohen Family; the innovative Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americans with Conductor Alondra de la Parra; the superb Tenor Joel Prieto, and brilliant pianist Ana Karina Alamo D’Alessandro. All the evening performances will be held at 7 p.m. at Symphony Hall, Stowe High School in Stowe, Vermont.
COHEN FAMILY
The series begins with the celebrated Cohen family – violinist Lucie Robert Cohen, pianist Jeremy Cohen and their son, 13-year-old Jeffery Cohen whose repertoire includes piano, conducting and opera singing. Mr. Cohen has been praised by the New York Times for the “lucidity and poetry” of his playing. Ms. Cohen is no less acclaimed for her violin virtuosity as a recitalist and chamber musician, having appeared throughout Europe, U.S.A., Canada and the Far East. Their son, Jeffery, the youngest performer at the festival, made his debut at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in February 2006. A musical phenomenon, his extraordinary mastery of piano has earned him critical accolades. He debuted as conductor with the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF THE AMERICAS
On Thursday, August 16, the popular Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, under the conductorship of Alondra de la Parra, will explore a variety of Latin American compositions. Ms. de la Parra is the founder and artistic director of the orchestra and also
principle guest conductor of the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra. Under her
leadership the Orchestra of the Americas has distinguished itself as a leading showcase for Latin-American music and promising instrumentalists and composers.
JOEL PRIETO
The orchestra will be joined by Joel Prieto, one of opera’s most talented young tenors and
a member of the esteemed Atelier Lyrique. the Opera National de Paris. Mr. Prieto was
2005 regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions where he also received prizes for best male singer and zarzuela performance. The winner of numerous competitions, Mr. Prieto’s range of roles and depth of talent augur a promising future.
TAMBUCO
Internationally revered for its caliber of music and scintillating performances, Tambuco is one of the finest and most innovative percussion groups in the world. Founded in 1993 by four distinguished Mexican musicians, Tambuco’s repertoire ranges from percussion and ethnic drum music to avant-garde. They have collaborated with world-renown performers and ensembles including the Kronas Quartet, most recently on its Grammy nominated album, Nuevo. The group has recorded seven CD’s and won two Grammy nominations for best chamber music ensemble and best classical CD. The group plays in Stowe on Friday night, August 17.
SATURDAY NIGHT FINALE WITH PIANIST D’ALESSANDRO
The Saturday night grand finale features gifted Venezuelan pianist, Ana Karina Alamo D’Alessandro and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. Known for her skill and a mesmerizing stage presence, Ms. Alamo has played the world’s great venues including the Rios Reina at the Teresa Carreno Hall (Caracas), Carnegie Hall and Ehrbar Hall (Vienna). In 1997, she was awarded the Jose Felix Ribas Prize, Venezuela’s highest honor to a young artist for contributions to the nation’s cultural enhancement. Ms. Alamo has won numerous piano competitions in the United States, Europe and Latin America.
With its sixth concert series, the Stowe Summer Music Festival lives up to its reputation and mission to showcase classical music’s international virtuosos and the best and brightest rising musicians. Keeping with its mandate to provide great music for everyone, there is no admission charge for these concerts.
